49ers Show Resilience Despite Injury Struggles
In a crucial NFC West showdown, the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 36-24 on Thursday night. Roughly nine minutes after extending their lead to 20 points, linebacker Fred Warner experienced déjà vu.
Seattle had scored 14 straight points, narrowing the 49ers’ lead to just six. With the ball coming back to Seattle to start the fourth quarter, doubts crept in. The 49ers had recently lost double-digit fourth-quarter leads to the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals. Warner felt the pressure, admitting, “It was something that felt familiar.”
This time, however, the 49ers held their ground despite injuries and an unfavorable replay review. They secured a much-needed victory that improved their record to 3-3.
A Must-Win Game for the 49ers
Head coach Kyle Shanahan stressed the importance of the game. A loss would have dropped the team to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the division. “We got a little spoiled in that way,” Shanahan said. “You can never feel too relaxed.”
The victory not only boosted the 49ers’ morale but also tied them with Seattle at the top of the division, providing an advantage in potential tiebreakers.
Overcoming Injuries
The 49ers faced numerous injury challenges throughout the game. Key players like running back Christian McCaffrey and linebacker Dre Greenlaw were already sidelined. On Thursday, cornerback Charvarius Ward was inactive due to a knee bruise, while rookie safety Malik Mustapha left with an ankle sprain.
Running back Jordan Mason also faced injury struggles. After a strong first half with 73 rushing yards, he was limited in the second half. Coach Shanahan mentioned Mason would undergo further tests to assess the injury’s severity.
Controversial Replay Review
Compounding their challenges, the 49ers faced a contentious replay situation. A review failed to overturn a play where Seattle’s Dee Williams appeared to touch a punt, which San Francisco recovered. Shanahan expressed frustration, stating, “I thought for sure they’d have a bunch of camera angles.” Ultimately, the call stood, but it didn’t hinder the 49ers’ performance.
Rookies Rise to the Occasion
Despite the setbacks, the 49ers’ rookies stepped up. Cornerback Renardo Green recorded his first career interception, setting up a crucial touchdown pass from quarterback Brock Purdy to tight end George Kittle. Rookie Isaac Guerendo also made a significant impact with a 76-yard run, effectively sealing the victory.
Kittle praised the team’s experience, stating, “When new guys feel the confidence from those who’ve been there before, they fit right in.”
Looking Ahead to the Kansas City Chiefs
While the 49ers celebrate this win, they quickly turn their focus to the Kansas City Chiefs. Historically, the 49ers have struggled against Kansas City, losing every matchup since Shanahan took over in 2017, including two Super Bowl defeats.
Kansas City currently boasts a perfect 5-0 record, and the 49ers recognize the challenge ahead. “We know what type of team that is,” Williams noted. “It’s going to be a tough game.” The team is eager to regroup and prepare for another critical matchup.
